Leaf Disposal/Compost

The City of Battle Creek contract with Waste Management for curbside trash pickup includes disposal of leaves and yard waste, as long as the material is bagged or bundled in recyclable bags and clearly marked. Containers labeled "yard waste" are also acceptable. Paper leaf bags are available at most area grocery stores. Labels for purchased containers are available from the city’s Utility Billing Department at City Hall, 10 N. Division St.
Yard Waste collection for 2018 takes place March 26 to Nov. 30 on residents' regular pickup days.

Disposal Options

You have several options, including:
  • Bag leaves in paper bags - leaf bags for specifically designed for this purpose are sold in most area grocery stores - or place them in a container clearly marked "yard waste." Each container cannot exceed 50 pounds in weight. Waste Management will haul them away along with your regular trash. No plastic bags, please.
  • Hire a private contractor to collect your leaves; many will provide free estimates.
  • Mow them with your lawn mower and leave them as a natural mulch for your lawn.
  • Compost them in a corner of your yard, or haul them in bulk to the city’s resident drop-off compost site. Brice Pit is located at 715 W. River Road. Take Bedford Road south to River, turn right (just past Budget Self-Storage). Brice Pit is approximately a quarter-mile down, on the left. As of June 29, 2018, regular hours are 7:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday; and closed Sunday. Again, no plastic bags, please, and no contractor dumping.

Burning Leaves

Burning leaves within city limits is prohibited, even with a burn permit.
