[ARCHIVED] Open house Dec. 3 on Roosevelt bike lane project

Roosevelt 4 to 3 lane conversion project in 2020

The city will hold a public open house about a bike lane project on a section of Roosevelt Avenue East planned for next summer.

The project adds bike lanes, and removes one vehicle lane, from Roosevelt between Garrison Avenue and Goodale Avenue East, near the Calhoun Area Career Center and Kellogg Community College.

City engineers will hold a public open house to hear feedback on this project from 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the Department of Public Works, 150 S. Kendall St.

The city’s Non-Motorized Transportation Plan in 2006 included a proposed project to add bike lanes to Roosevelt Avenue. To make room for bike lanes, we will reduce the vehicle lanes from four to three; currently there are two vehicle traffic lanes in each direction.

This project would create the first separated bike lanes in Battle Creek. In each direction is proposed a five-foot bike lane, then two-to-three feet of empty space, then the 12-foot vehicle lane.

The city plans this project for the summer of 2020, at the same time this section of Roosevelt is scheduled for a chip seal resurfacing treatment. Chip sealing is the inexpensive, effective way to extend pavement life, by sealing small stone chips in liquid asphalt.

Public feedback is welcome via the Dec. 3 open house, and by phone or email to city Engineer/Assistant DPW Director Carl Fedders, at 269-966-3343 or cefedders@battlecreekmi.gov. Find more information on this project at the city’s website, www.battlecreekmi.gov. Scroll down the home page to the City Spotlight for a link to Frequently Asked Questions.
