Other information: The Battle Creek Fire Department was dispatched at 2:40 a.m. to 390 S. Washington Ave., the former Southwestern Junior High, for a reported structure fire. Crews arrived quickly to find a fire on the second floor, contained to a classroom, later identified as the band room. Engine 2 and Rescue 4 performed an interior attack, while Rescue 3 and Engine 5 performed an extensive search. Car 3 assumed command, a water supply was established, and all additional crews, including Engine 6 and Squad 6, performed multiple tasks to quickly bring the fire under control. The structure has been vacant for many years, and the cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
