8/30/2023 UPDATE:

Due to weather-related delays, the city contractor performing the preparation and paving work at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Sisson Avenue has had to postpone work on the project by one day. This means that Riverside Drive, between East Burnham Street and Territorial Road East, is open today, Wednesday, Aug. 30.

As a result, the preparation work, including digging out and grading the intersection, will now occur tomorrow, Thursday, Aug. 31, and the repaving work will happen Friday, Sept. 1. All other details, including the work hours, road closure area, and recommended detour route remain the same.

Our City Engineering team will work with the contractor crews in order to attempt to have all work completed, and Riverside Drive reopened, by 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, in order to help with the holiday-related traffic.

8/29/2023 UPDATE:

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — City contractors will be onsite to prepare for and complete paving at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Sisson Avenue, resulting in the temporary closure of a section of Riverside, beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 30.

Crews will first dig out and grade the intersection of Riverside Drive and Sisson Avenue Wednesday, Aug. 30. They will then return to repave the intersection Thursday, Aug. 31.

The following section of Riverside Drive will be temporarily closed during this preparation and paving work:

  • Riverside Drive, between East Burnham Street and Territorial Road East

No thru traffic will be allowed in the above-mentioned section of Riverside Drive, however neighbors will be able to get to and from their homes. A posted detour will be in place for both traffic and pedestrians, as follows:

  • Northbound detour route: Turn left on Territorial Road East, turn right on Capital Avenue SW, turn right on East Burnham Street, and then turn left to resume northbound on Riverside Drive
  • Southbound detour route: Turn right on East Burnham Street, turn left on Capital Avenue SW, turn left on Territorial Road East, and then turn right to resume southbound on Riverside Drive

Crews expect the preparation and paving work at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Sisson Avenue to be completed by Thursday, Aug. 31, with work hours both days generally being 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

This work is part of an ongoing project to install a lift station and replace the sewer main along Sisson Avenue, from Riverside Drive to the dead end. As a reminder, a lift station is used to move wastewater and sewage from lower to higher elevations, especially when the natural flow of gravity is not enough to efficiently move material through the sewer mains. The installation of a lift station, as well as the replacement of the sewer main, will fix the issues of the current sewer main being too shallow and frozen laterals along the main.

We appreciate everyone’s patience during all work on our city’s infrastructure.

(Original release below.)

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — City contractors began a months-long project to install a lift station and to replace the sewer main on Sisson Avenue Wednesday, March 22.

The work will impact the entire length of Sisson Avenue, from Riverside Drive to the dead end. Work hours will generally be from 7 a.m.-7 p.m., with the project estimated to be completed by Sept. 30, 2023, weather permitting.

A lift station is used to move wastewater and sewage from lower to higher elevations, especially when the natural flow of gravity is not enough to efficiently move material through the sewer mains. The installation of a lift station, as well as the replacement of the sewer main, will fix the issues of the current sewer main being too shallow and frozen laterals along the main.

There are no expected road closures as a result of this project, however drivers and pedestrian traffic should be aware of the ongoing work in the area, following the directions of any additional signage and construction workers present. Temporary lane shifts along Riverside Drive, at Sisson Avenue, are possible throughout the project.

There is also no expected impact to any Battle Creek Transit routes, however we will share updates if any route changes are needed, as a result of this project.

We appreciate everyone’s patience during all work on our city’s infrastructure.
