BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The City of Battle Creek was recognized for its environmental leadership again this year, as one of 25 communities to achieve gold status through the statewide 2022 Michigan Green Communities Challenge.
The annual Michigan Green Communities Challenge awards local communities with bronze, silver, or gold seals of achievement to reflect a community’s leadership in areas, including energy efficiency, climate adaptation and resilience, recycling, and environmental justice.
This year, the city was awarded the highest achievement, gold status, for its exemplary action in multiple categories, including planning, energy efficiency, materials management (such as recycling, composting, and waste diversion), water conservation and protection, clean mobility, and community engagement.
The city was recognized for its established Sustainability Plan and Sustainable Battle Creek Committee that meets every other month to track progress toward identified goals. Additionally, the city was commended for making great strides in energy efficiency improvements at city facilities, introducing hybrid vehicles into the city’s fleet, increasing neighbors’ access to recycling opportunities, and protecting the natural resources within our community.
The Michigan Green Communities program is open to all local governments throughout Michigan, at no cost. The program guides and supports communities in adapting to a changing climate, protecting infrastructure, improving the quality of life for neighbors, and creating a more environmentally and economically sustainable future for communities throughout Michigan.
