Other information: The Battle Creek Fire Department was dispatched at 2:36 a.m. to a structure fire at 12610 Hedges Lane. Rescue 6 and Squad 6 arrived first, to discover fire on the backyard deck and back of the attached garage.

All occupants were out of the home.

Upon arrival, Car 3 immediately called for water supply support from East Leroy Township Fire and Climax Fire. Rescue 4 performed roof ventilation, Engine 2 supported interior crews from Station 6, and Engine 5 established a Rapid Intervention Crew and performed a secondary search. Engine 3 and Truck 1 arrived to perform ventilation and additional support.

Due to the coordinated attack and roof ventilation, the structure received minimal damage except for the garage. The Fire Marshal investigated the incident and determined the cause to be the heat from a fire pit container on the deck. Thank you to East Leroy Township Fire and Climax Fire for their quick response with plenty of water tanker support.
