[ARCHIVED] Mattress disposal bags available at City Hall

Unwrapped mattress

In an effort to help those living within the city limits properly dispose of old mattresses and box springs, the city’s Code Compliance Division is offering large, plastic bags at no cost.

The bags are large enough to hold a 12-inch-thick mattress or box spring.

Neighbors can stop in Room 117 at City Hall, 10 N. Division, during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The only requirements are to supply your name and address.

The city purchased 300 bags with a grant from the Battle Creek Community Foundation, and has funding available to purchase more. Code officers have distributed bags and an information card when they see a need during their typical work around the city.

Due to ongoing concerns about bed bugs and general sanitation, last winter Waste Management began strictly enforcing the requirement that mattresses and box springs be securely wrapped before they’re set at the curb for disposal. When drivers come upon unwrapped mattresses, they will mark them with a green tag.

Mattresses and box springs must be completely wrapped in plastic, and taped at the ends.

Officials appreciate everyone’s cooperation when disposing of unwanted items. Proper disposal is essential for the health and safety of all neighbors, city staff, and waste haulers.
