Fire crews responded to one of the city's own facilities this afternoon, when burning mulch caused a fire at the Police Department.
The call came just before 4 p.m. on the east side of the current Police Department building, 20 N. Division St. The new police building is under construction across John Patterson Way.
Officials believe mulch caught fire before it fell into an old vent in the ground, where it caught on fire a two-by-four. It is unknown how the mulch caught fire.
Smoke filled the Police Department's basement, and also entered the main floor of the building. Employees were evacuated.
There were no injuries, no items or information were compromised, and there was no damage to the building.
Crews were ventilating the building at approximately 4:35 p.m., after which employees were able to return inside.
