Other information: Battle Creek Fire Department was dispatched to a possible structure fire with reported fire and smoke showing from the roof at the strip mall located at the corner of West Columbia and South 28th Street. Rescue 4 arrived to find flames and smoke showing from a roof HVAC unit. The business under the unit was vacant and R-4 proceeded interior to investigate. Car-3 then arrived to assume command and direct the crews. Truck 6 arrived and set up aerial operations to access the roof unit. T-6 was able to turn off the gas to the unit and the fire was extinguished soon after. After investigation, the fire appeared to be contained to the HVAC unit. Engines 2 and 5 assisted with interior investigation. R-3 stood by at the fire department suppression connection. Car-1 arrived and managed additional calls for service in the city. Semco secured the main gas line to the roof HVAC units as it appeared ice & snow on the roof had shifted, causing a break in the gas line. Fire crews worked with the property management and Semco to secure the building and ensure proper repairs would be made. The adjoining businesses were not affected. Fire crews on scene were E-2, R-3, R-4, E-5, T-6, Squad 6, Car 3 and Car 1.
