The intersection of Capital Avenue SW and Beckley Road will remain mostly open as the Michigan Department of Transportation prepares to set beams for the new bridge this weekend.
The contractor plans to do this work overnight, from about 8 p.m. Friday night, Aug. 4, to 10 a.m. Saturday morning, Aug. 5. At this time, this should only be in place for the one night. If the contractor needs more time, the same changes will be in place overnight Saturday, Aug. 5.
MDOT has shared the following with the city:
- Daytime work – There are no traffic changes expected beyond what is in place already. Workers will set beams from the center bridge pier to the north side of Capital. This is already in the closed section of I-94.
- Nighttime work – Workers will set beams from the center pier to the south side of Capital. This will change I-94 traffic in these ways:
- Westbound I-94 – Starting at 8 p.m., there will be a single-lane closure and traffic will be rerouted off 94 and back on via the Capital Avenue SW off- and on-ramps. The traffic signal will be covered and not used, so traffic can flow freely.
Traffic cannot exit onto northbound Capital Avenue; they must continue to Helmer Road to exit.
- Eastbound I-94 – Starting at 8 p.m., Michigan State Police will help with a single-lane closure and slow-moving, 15-minute closures to set the beam.
- Northbound Capital/Beckley Road – After 8 p.m., Michigan State Police will help with occasional, five- to 10-minute closures at the intersection, so trucks can deliver the bridge beams into the work zone.
- Southbound Capital – Traffic must use the posted detour on Knapp, Minges, Watkins, and Helmer to get onto I-94 at Helmer Road. Traffic cannot get on westbound 94 from Capital.
