BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — City contractor crews began the first phase of the 2024 Capital Avenue rehabilitation project this week.

The Capital Avenue rehab project will include sidewalk ramp upgrades, milling and paving the roadway, as well as new pavement markings and manhole adjustments, along a more than four-mile stretch of Capital, from West Van Buren Street to Rebecca Road.

The work during the Capital Avenue rehab project will be done in three phases:

  • Phase 1- Capital Avenue, from West Van Buren Street to Dickman Road
  • Phase 2- Capital Avenue, from Dickman Road to Columbia Avenue
  • Phase 3- Capital Avenue, from Columbia Avenue to Rebecca Road

Within each phase, work will begin with sidewalk ramp upgrades and then progress to later milling and paving of Capital Avenue in that phase’s section. The final work within each phase will feature new pavement markings and manhole adjustments.

While there are no expected complete road closures during most of the rehab project work, temporary lane shifts and sidewalk closures will be in place during each of the three phases. Neighbors are reminded to be aware of workers and equipment in active construction areas, and of any directions from workers or signage in the area.

Battle Creek Transit routes will not be affected during most of the rehab project work, but riders should be aware of the temporary lane shifts as work progresses through each phase since some bus stops may be impacted. We will message any Transit-specific route or stop changes, as they arise.

If a section of Capital Avenue is only open to a single lane of traffic, due to a temporary lane shift during work, then Transit may have to service a bus stop from a different lane. Neighbors are reminded to be cautious when traveling behind buses, as they may make sudden stops to service passengers boarding or exiting the buses.

Crews will generally be working from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. during the project. The overall estimated completion date for the Capital Avenue rehab project is Oct. 15, 2024, depending on any weather-related delays.

Crews began sidewalk ramp upgrade work in Phase 1’s section this week. While there are no specific start and end dates for the other phases yet, we encourage neighbors to stay tuned for more information as we move into new phases of work in this project.

We appreciate everyone’s patience during all work on our city’s infrastructure.
