7/25/24 UPDATE:

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — City contractor crews began the final stage of the Capital Avenue rehabilitation project along Capital, from Columbia Avenue to Rebecca Road, this week.

This final stage of work will occur in the third phase of the Capital Avenue rehab project, and include the following section of Capital:

  • Phase 3 - Capital Avenue, from Columbia Avenue to Rebecca Road

While there are no expected complete road closures during this stage of work, temporary lane closures and lane shifts, and sidewalk closures will be in place during the project. Neighbors are encouraged to plan for temporary delays as they travel in this area, and to be aware of workers and equipment in active construction areas, as well as any directions from workers or signage in the area.

Crews began this work Monday, July 22, and expect to be completed with this stage of the project by Sunday, Sept. 15. Work hours will generally be from 7 a.m.-7 p.m., for sidewalk ramp upgrades, and 7 p.m.-7 a.m., for milling and paving work.

Battle Creek Transit’s 4S-SW Capital route may be impacted by this stage of the project. Transit will continue to operate this route as normal, however riders should expect delays along this route. If a detour is needed during this stage, neighbors will be notified via both Transit’s Facebook page and Transit Announcement text alerts, which neighbors can subscribe to on the city website’s Notify Me page. (The Transit Announcements can be found under the “Alert Center” category on the Notify Me page.)

If a section of Capital Avenue is only open to a single lane of traffic, due to a temporary lane closure and/or lane shift during work, then Transit may have to service a bus stop from a different lane. Neighbors are reminded to be cautious when traveling behind buses, as they may make sudden stops to service passengers boarding or exiting the buses.

As a reminder, the Capital Avenue rehab project will include sidewalk ramp upgrades, milling and paving the roadway, as well as new pavement markings and manhole adjustments, along a more than four-mile stretch of Capital, from West Van Buren Street to Rebecca Road.

Within each phase of the project, work will begin with sidewalk ramp upgrades and then progress to later milling and paving of Capital Avenue in that phase’s section. The final work within each phase will feature new pavement markings and manhole adjustments.

The overall estimated completion date for the Capital Avenue rehab project is Oct. 15, 2024, depending on any weather-related delays.

We appreciate everyone’s patience during all work on our city’s infrastructure.
