Dec. 9-15, 2024, is Michigan Water and Wastewater Professionals Week. Join us this week as we spotlight the essential water and wastewater professionals who provide water services to Battle Creek neighbors.

Meet Jack Day Jr.! After graduating from Pennfield High School, Jack set his sights on becoming an electrical apprentice. Today, Jack uses his skills to help keep the City of Battle Creek’s Wastewater Treatment Plant operational.

What are your primary duty responsibilities?

As an electrical apprentice, I update and maintain the electrical for the WWTP.

What’s the best part of your job?

There’s always something new to do or learn.

What’s a recent project that gave you a great sense of accomplishment? What made it special?

Working with the other journeymen on how to put bypass floats in our lift stations. It was challenging but it felt good when we figured it out.

What are some of the most significant improvements or changes you’ve seen in the water and wastewater systems in Battle Creek?

We increased safety and wastewater capacity by constructing new lift stations — Edgebrook and Minges Brook. Now, both lift stations are accessible at ground level and staff no longer need to work below ground to maintain the pumps.
