Feb. 16-22, 2025, is Engineers Week. Join us as we spotlight some of the people behind the design, construction, and record-keeping of our city's streets, bridges, and water and sewer systems. 

Meet Amber Whitcomb! A graduate of Athens High School, Amber now serves the City of Battle Creek as a civil engineering technician. In her role, she helps oversee the Lead Service Replacement project, compiling and inspecting data, as well as inspecting various engineering jobs. 

What’s the best part of your job? 

Being able to continuously learn something new, either from a co-worker or a contractor. 

What’s a recent project that gave you a great sense of accomplishment? What made it special? 

I am currently working on replacing lead servicesand it makes me feel good knowing that neighbors can feel safer drinking our water and also that the cost isn’t a burden for them. 

What role do you think engineers will play in addressing future challenges in Battle Creek? 

Engineering plays an important role in making sure that our city’s infrastructure is being improved and functioning properly for the citizens and visitors of Battle Creek. 

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working? 

Hanging with my family, coaching, and working my shirt business. 

If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be and why? 

To see into the future! 

What skills and qualities do you think are essential for someone in your position? 

Good communication. 

What advice would you give to young aspiring engineers who want to make a difference in the Battle Creek community? 

Make sure to listen to all the little details while learning. Even the smallest thing can make a huge difference in a project.
