[ARCHIVED] Downtown electric work starts today - April 7

Jackson Street Electric work Flyer

Starting today – Tuesday, April 7 – Consumers Energy will begin a five-month electrical upgrade project on Jackson Street downtown, which will temporarily close McCamly Street, then Capital Avenue SW.

The work closing McCamly today also will require changes for three Battle Creek Transit routes. Watch for other potential changes throughout the project.

McCamly will be closed first, starting today. Consumers expects it will reopen at the end of April. Capital SW will close around May 1, and reopen on June 8. The exact timeline depends on weather, and any unforeseen work needs.

The work is to build underground infrastructure for new electrical cables that will improve service downtown, and support continued growth. Consumers does not plan any power outages during the work, but will notify those affected if an outage becomes necessary.

Visitors can access the Riverwalk Centre parking lot from Michigan Avenue throughout construction. Traffic patterns will change on Jackson throughout the work, and sidewalk access will be restricted, depending on the construction stage. Please be alert to these changes, as well as to social distancing of at least six feet while we are still facing the COVID-19 pandemic.

The closure on McCamly will affect Transit routes 2E Emmett/East, 3W Kendall/Goodale, and 1W West Michigan on Saturdays. During the closure, all buses will detour outbound from the downtown Transfer Center, using Hamblin, Capital, and Van Buren to get back to McCamly Street.

Buses will NOT service the following stops during this time – McCamly and West Michigan (inbound/outbound), McCamly near Clara’s on the River (outbound), and Willard Library (outbound). Riders should use the bus stop near Battle Creek Central High School, or the Transfer Center on McCamly Street.
