[ARCHIVED] Two projects close parts of Main St, Capital SW

Main and Capital SW closures May 19, 2020

Two work projects – one electrical, one railroad – will temporarily close sections of Main Street and Capital Avenue SW, and change some bus routes.

*First, a Consumers Energy electrical capacity expansion project downtown has moved down Jackson Street to close a section of Capital Avenue SW.

Capital is closed from Hamblin Avenue to Michigan Avenue. The detour will use McCamly Street.

Consumers expects Capital will reopen in early June.

For this closure, Battle Creek Transit’s 4N NE Capital bus route will miss the stops at Michigan/Capital and at St. Thomas Church. The 3E Main-Post bus route will miss the stop at Mill Race Park. Please catch these buses at other locations.

*Second, Canadian National Railway will close the railroad crossing over Main Street for at least two weeks, starting Tuesday, May 19.

They will close the crossing, near Dickman Road, to upgrade the crossing, giving it a smoother transition. The detour will use Dickman, McCamly Street, and Michigan Avenue.

This crossing is part of the city’s railroad quiet zone – three miles of track through downtown on which trains do not sound their routine horns at the street crossings. However, as required when construction crews are present, trains will sound their horns as they approach this crossing, during this work.

For this closure, Transit’s 3E Main-Post bus route will miss the stop at the Community Action Agency (in- and outbound), Main/Willow, Lathrop/Main, and Main/Mary. Because of this, passengers should expect delays, and plan their trips accordingly.
