Other information: The Battle Creek Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 63 Merritt St. Car 3 arrived to find fire on the first and second floors of a duplex-style apartment. The exterior of the neighbor’s house to the south was also catching fire. Engine 2 stretched an attack line to extinguish the exterior fire at the neighbor’s house, then proceeded to extinguish the fire unit. Rescue 4 assisted to extinguish the interior fire and check for any occupants. The fire apartment was determined to be vacant. The occupants of the second apartment safely exited and the family pet was rescued by fire crews. Rescue 3, Engine 5, Truck 6, Squad 4, and Squad 6 assisted with fire attach operations. No injuries were reported and the fire is still under investigation. Quick action by fire personnel led to minimal damage on the neighbor’s house, and a quick stop on the fire apartment.
