2021 City Road Construction Projects

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The city’s engineering team is announcing the 2021 road construction projects.

The City Commission approved the projects at the commission meeting on March 2. City staff tentatively expect some work to begin next week.

View the list of streets on the next page, and with the accompanying map at battlecreekmi.gov/publicworks. Click on Engineering, then see Road Surface Treatments.

Before work begins, neighbors may encounter the city team performing maintenance and inspections, including activities like tree trimming, water valve exercising, lead water service line replacement, and sewer inspections.

As work is set to begin in specific areas, the city will release that information, details about any road closures or lane shifts, and expected duration of work. This information is released to the media, posted on the city’s website and social media, and marked on the interactive project map, accessible via our home page and mobile app.  Customers can also get information on these projects by signing up for alerts at battlecreekmi.gov/list.aspx.

The city also requires contractors to hang door announcements 24 hours ahead of construction.

Treatment types are as follows:

  • Crack fill is a Filling of 3/8-inch or wider preliminary cracks on recently-treated roads. This prevents cracks from widening and spreading, keeping out water.  The filler is a cold liquid asphalt.
  • Chip seal is an inexpensive, effective method to extend pavement life, by applying small chips in a liquid asphalt. Then a fog seal, another layer of asphalt, is applied. It can last five to six years, and up to 10 years for low-volume roads.
  • Resurfacing is a quick process in which crews will mill up to two inches off the top of a road – enough to remove defects – and then apply a new layer of asphalt. This can last up to 10 years.
  • Reconstructing is a full pulverization of the asphalt and six inches of base; the mixture will be used as the base for the new pavement.  Layers of asphalt vary.

The city will release additional information on construction work and projects throughout the season. Officials ask everyone to stay tuned for those updates and appreciate everyone’s patience and caution during this and all work to maintain our city infrastructure.
