[ARCHIVED] Electronics, Styrofoam recycling event this Saturday

Styrofoam collection

Now that spring has arrived and everyone is busy with spring cleaning, the City of Battle Creek and Calhoun County are working together to again offer a FREE electronics and Styrofoam #6 collection, so residents can recycle these items and keep them out of the landfill.

The city and Calhoun County Public Health Department invite you to this collection this Saturday, April 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the city’s Department of Public Works, 150 S. Kendall St.

The following items will be accepted at this collection event:
• Computers and computer equipment
• Laptops
• LCD and CRT monitors
• Printers
• Wires and cords
• Copy/fax machines
• Audio/visual equipment
• LCD, plasma and tube televisions
• Video game consoles
• Stereo equipment
• Lamps
• Small kitchen appliances and electronics
• Other items with a cord
• Car batteries
• Household batteries
• Styrofoam #6

Styrofoam #6 is called polystyrene and usually has a “6” embossed on it. Polystyrene typically is used in foam cups, plates, egg cartons and packing material. Foam packing peanuts and construction foam will not be accepted, as they are made from a different type of foam. All materials brought to the collection must be clean. Dirty or soiled materials cannot be accepted.

Any resident or business with a large quantity of materials should contact an electronics recycling company directly for proper disposal. This collection is for residential electronic waste only and fees will apply if a large amount of material is brought to the collection without proper notice.
