[ARCHIVED] Call to artists for downtown origami sculpture exhibit

Flyer with origami style sculptures on the right, blue with text about call for artists

In an effort to increase community access to art and enrichment, and beautify our downtown, the city’s Small Business Development team is calling for artists to participate in a origami sculpture exhibit.

The SBD team seeks sculptures for an outdoor exhibit that will appear in various locations in downtown Battle Creek this fall.

We will display the sculptures for one year, open and free to the public. The team expects to choose between five and seven sculptures for the display, and the public will select one of those to remain downtown permanently after the one year is up.

The SBD team will offer a $950 stipend to each regional artist, or team of artists, creating the selected display sculptures. The stipends can cover general project expenses, including transportation, insurance, and installation/removal.

Information for potential artists:

  • Create a large-scale (approximately 3 feet by 5 feet by 6 feet), origami-inspired project for outdoor display.
  • City will supply a concrete pad, and we must be able to bolt to sculpture to the pad.
  • Apply by July 1, 2021. We will notify the selected artists on July 15.
  • We will being exhibit installation in mid-October.
