[ARCHIVED] Three schools locked down as precaution after shooting incident

Battle Creek Police Department patch

Three schools were placed on lockdown for about 30 minutes today near a shooting incident that took place in the 200 block of Jordan Street.

Police responded to the area at 10:37 a.m. today on a report of shots fired. Two men in their 20s had arrived at their stepfather’s home in the area, and the three had a dispute. The stepfather and one of the stepsons each pulled a handgun, shooting at each other. They ran from the scene on foot, but did not leave Jordan Street before police arrived.

Police placed Dudley STEM, Battle Creek Academy, and Northwestern Middle School on lockdown as a precaution, while they investigated what happened.

No one was hit by the gunshots, and no one was injured. Police found six total shell casings from both guns at the scene, and recovered two handguns, a .40-caliber pistol and a 9mm – one outdoors and one inside the home.

Police arrested the 20-year-old stepson and 47-year-old stepfather on charges of assault with intent to commit murder. They are lodged at the Calhoun County Jail.
