[ARCHIVED] Sewer lining project starts Tuesday at Wentworth/Foster

Starting this week, a project to add a lining to a large sanitary sewer pipe in the east-central part of the city will briefly affect toilet use for neighbors as the work moves through the area over the next few weeks.

As the project moves, neighbors will receive door hangers 24 hours ahead of work on their streets. Toilet use will be limited for about 24 hours after the work moves through, so the lining adhesive can set.

This project will start on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Wentworth Avenue/Foster Avenue, then move to Foster/Orleans Avenue, to Orleans/Capital Avenue SW, to Capital SW/Grandview Court, and finish at Grandview/Grand Boulevard.

The first few days, crews will move equipment and prepare for the work. Work will move from one manhole to the next along the route above. As the project moves, we will share more information about the necessary road closures.

We will share and post a detour when this work crosses Capital SW at Orleans and Grandview. This will be in place for a few days later this month.

Battle Creek Transit will plan detours for the 2W Columbia-Territorial and 4S SW Capital bus routes as the project progresses, especially around Highland and Capital avenues. Please stay tuned for additional route information, and sign up for Transit alert notifications at battlecreekmi.gov/notifyme.

This project will add a lining to a 24-inch to 30-inch sanitary sewer main that has been deteriorating inside due to naturally occurring hydrogen sulfide gas. The lining will protect the concrete pipe and restore the main to its original thickness. It will also add at least 70 years to the design life of the sewer main. The lining is a felt material that will stick to the pipe with a wet resin.

Neighbors might notice some odor from the resin – a glue-like smell. Please contact our Department of Public Works with any questions at 269-966-3343.
