[ARCHIVED] Police arrest three teens in Cliff Street shooting/toddler death

Battle Creek Police Department patch

Battle Creek Police have arrested three Battle Creek young people in their mid- to late-teens in the murder of 2-year-old Kai Turner.

Thanks to work by Battle Creek Police and other law enforcement agencies, and the cooperation of the Battle Creek community (including multiple helpful tips through Silent Observer) police identified the three suspects. Police believe they are responsible for the early Tuesday morning drive-by shooting on Cliff Street.

Police will submit open murder and firearms charges to the Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office on all three suspects. They are now at the Calhoun County Jail and Calhoun County Youth Center.

Police executed multiple search warrants in the city on Thursday. Those searches resulted in police recovering guns, ammunition, and other property they suspect was used in the murder.

At about 2:20 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 100 block of Cliff Street, and found that 2-year-old Kai Rowan Turner was shot. He died at the hospital from his injuries.

The investigation found that a dark-colored SUV drove past, and someone fired multiple rounds into the home. Kai was the only person injured. Police believe Kai’s family was not the shooter’s intended target.

Tuesday afternoon in the area of Wagner Drive, police found the black Audi Q7 they believe was used during the shooting. The car was stole from West Columbia Avenue last Sunday, Sept. 18.

Battle Creek Police appreciate the help from our fellow law enforcement agencies in arresting these suspects, especially the Michigan Department of Corrections-Probation and Parole, and the Detroit Area Michigan State Police Fugitive Team.

We appreciate the community’s help in this case, and hope the suspect arrests help bring a measure of solace to Kai’s family, as they work through their unimaginable loss.
