The City of Battle Creek has entered an OPEN BURN BAN status, effective as of June 6, 2023. This status is in effect IMMEDIATELY and will remain in effect until further notice.
This determination is based on updated weather conditions in relation to excessive, dry conditions noted throughout the state of Michigan. Conditions are expected to remain dry and extreme for potential fire danger throughout the week. The Battle Creek Fire Department will continue to evaluate the status of weather conditions that may give conditional relief and lift of the ban in the following days to come. Rain is expected later this week at which point a reevaluation will be considered for resuming permissible open burning.
Burn permits WILL NOT be issued during the time of the ban. Those who have current existing burn permits ARE NOT EXEMPT from this ban.
The OPEN BURN BAN status includes the following prohibitions:
1. Neighbors MAY NOT BURN any yard waste materials or conduct any associated open burning.
2. Recreational campfires are PROHIBITED at this time. Cooking grills may be used. NO active cooking grill placement on yard surfaces. While grill cooking is permitted, it is asked that a water or extinguishing sources are kept close by areas of cooking. Additionally, NO recreational grill cooking should be left unattended.
