The suspect injured in an officer-involved shooting this afternoon on Boardman Avenue is an 18-year-old young man from Battle Creek.
Police were initially called at about 3:15 p.m. to the area of Dickman Road and Kendall Street, where a man was seen with a gun, and was possibly chasing someone. Police discovered he was involved in a felonious assault with a handgun – an argument in which he pointed the gun at others – before he ran, and an officer caught up to him on Boardman.
Police ordered the suspect to stop, but the young man ran. The officer chased him, giving him several orders to drop the gun. The investigation so far has found that it appears the suspect shot at the officer, and the officer returned fire, striking the suspect once in the shoulder.
The officer was not injured, and there were no other injuries. Police took the suspect into custody, and he was receiving medical treatment.
Police do not have video footage that shows the chase or the shooting. The officer is on paid administrative leave, which is routine after an officer-involved shooting. The Michigan State Police took over the investigation.
