The city’s Department of Public Works connects with neighbors every day – posting street signs, providing drinking water from your tap, designing road improvements, and so much more!
To share these great connections, the city will hold our second annual Public Works open house and touch-a-truck event from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22, in the department’s front parking lot, 150 S. Kendall St. Because the event will be outdoors, it will be weather dependent.
Public Works includes providing drinking water, treating wastewater, maintaining streets, engineering and designing infrastructure, keeping infrastructure records, and fleet services on everything from chainsaws to fire trucks. Our Public Works team will welcome neighbors with:
- Many of the city vehicles that help us serve, including a plow truck, Republic Services waste truck, street sweeper, and backhoe.Learn about what these vehicles do, and climb inside for a new perspective!
- Demonstrations, including our Water team racing the clock to build a fire hydrant, what it looks like inside a sewer pipe, and step up to a traffic signal.
- Fun giveaways! Pick up a bucket of city-made compost! Take our recycling challenge! Pick up a water droplet stress ball and other city swag items, while supplies last!
- Enjoy free snacks! Restrooms will be available, too.
We hope to see neighbors of all ages join our team for the Public Works experience!
