Battle Creek Police Department patch

UPDATE 9/27

Battle Creek Police arrested 36-year-old Dequan Evans on Tuesday in connection with the shooting early Saturday morning, Sept. 23, at a Liberty Mart in Post Addition.

Evans was arraigned today on charges of assault with intent to murder, carrying a concealed weapon, discharge from a vehicle causing injury, two counts of felony firearm, and two counts of resisting and obstructing.

Officers with the COPS Unit identified Evans through surveillance footage, and developed information about where to find him. This took them to an address on the first block of Wentworth Avenue.

Officers knocked on the door, and a woman who answered said Evans wasn’t in the apartment. However, officers saw him through an open window, sleeping in a front bedroom. Officers spoke to him, he eventually came outside, and officers took him into custody.

Police also obtained a search warrant for the home. They collected one handgun that was unrelated to the Liberty Mart shooting, along with evidence that is related to the shooting.

The shooting happened at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday at the Liberty Mart at 240 Cliff St. Police responded at about 10:30 a.m. when a 39-year-old man arrived at a local hospital for medical treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the thigh.

Police said the suspect vehicle pulled into the Liberty Mart parking lot. The victim walked to the vehicle, reportedly to ask for money. As he got close to the vehicle, a man in the passenger-side backseat shot at the victim, and a round hit the victim in the thigh. As the victim walked away, the suspect fired additional rounds.

A woman driving the car had gone into the Liberty Mart while this took place. Afterward, she drove the car away from the store. A family member took the victim to the hospital later that morning.
