City administrators would like to offer a reminder of the local ordinance regarding general public comment to the City Commission.
In the Administrative Code, Chapter 212 discusses the City Commission, including rules of commission procedure.
Speakers at city commission meetings may address the commission on any matter within their control and jurisdiction during the general public comment period. Each speaker has three minutes to address the commission during this time.
Most issues in the national news and court decisions not prosecuted by the city prosecutor’s office are examples of items that are not within the commission’s control and jurisdiction. Therefore, comment on these issues would not be allowed during general public comment.
In addition, comment only to announce a person’s candidacy for a county office – such as judge, prosecutor or county commissioner – is also not in the city commission’s control, and also would not be allowed during general public comment.
We appreciate everyone’s attention to this rule.
