BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The City of Battle Creek is calling on neighbors to participate in a crucial survey and workshops that will shape the future of community development and housing in Battle Creek.
The city reviews its master plan and conducts a needs assessment every five years. The forthcoming update will include a housing component focused on barriers to developing new housing needed for current neighbors and potential industrial development employees.
The assessment will help the city identify priorities for the 2025-2029 Consolidated Plan and the housing update to the city’s master plan, guiding the allocation of Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership federal dollars.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of CDBG funding, with the city receiving about $1.2 million annually in CDBG funds and $300,000 in HOME funds.
The Housing and Community Development Survey is now open to the public through Friday, Dec. 27. The survey, available in English and Spanish, can be found here: https://www.battlecreekmi.gov/181/Community-Development. A Burmese version will be added soon.
Community members are also invited to workshops on the city’s housing and community development needs Thursday, Dec. 12, in the Valentine Room of the Kool Family Community Center, located at 200 W Michigan Ave. Two sessions will be held: one from 2:30 to 4 p.m. and another from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Please mail or deliver handwritten surveys to City Hall, 10 N Division St., Room 117, in care of Darcy Schmitt, or email to dcschmitt@battlecreekmi.gov.
Please note that the survey will close Friday, Dec. 27.
