Dec. 9-15, 2024, is Michigan Water and Wastewater Professionals Week. Join us this week as we spotlight the essential water and wastewater professionals who provide water services to Battle Creek neighbors.

Meet Zach Gothard! After graduating from Harper Creek High School, Zach pursued a career in public service, joining Team Battle Creek as a water distribution operator.

What are your primary duties?

I help keep the city’s water service operational by repairing and replacing water mains, service lines and valves, and conducting routine checks on the distribution system.

What’s the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is operating heavy equipment like backhoes, dump trucks, loaders, and cranes. I also enjoy the challenge of locating and fixing underground issues.

What’s a recent project that gave you a great sense of accomplishment? What made it special?

I recently learned the step-by-step process of removing an old hydrant and installing a new one. This project stands out because it resolved a persistent issue, and it felt rewarding to solve the problem and learn a new skill.

Do you have any fun or interesting facts to share about your job?

New technology allows us to be more efficient in our work. For example, a few years ago we didn’t have Hydro Vactors to excavate soil and had to find pipes and utilities with shovels, which is back breaking work. Technology helps us complete our work faster and safer.

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working?

During my free time I enjoy golfing, working on cars, and projects around the house.

If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be and why?

X-ray vision. That way I could see through the ground and pinpoint the problem without wasting any time!

Can you share a story where you saw firsthand the positive effects of your work on the community or the environment?

A recent water main break had completely flooded a road and several yards. We tackled the issue as a team and quickly repaired the break. Once our work was complete, you couldn’t even tell that something had recently occurred there.

What skills and qualities do you think are essential for someone in your position?

A water distribution operator should be proficient with hand tools, familiar with operating various equipment, and overall be a well-rounded, hard worker.

Is there anything people are routinely surprised to learn about your line of work?

It can be interesting to see how we locate pipes, dig them up, and complete repairs. If you see us out working, come say hi and take a look!
