BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The City of Battle Creek will start a major sewer rehabilitation project next week.

The Elm to Union Sanitary Sewer project aims to reinforce the existing sewer infrastructure by installing a cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) to prevent water infiltration due to high groundwater conditions.

Weather permitting, crews will begin cleaning and inspecting the existing pipeline on Monday, Jan. 6. This stage of the project is expected to take approximately one week.

In early February, crews will start bypass pumping operations as they work to install 2,500 feet of CIPP liner for 6- to 18-inch sanitary sewer lines and epoxy lining for 20 manholes.

There will be no road closures during the sewer rehabilitation work, but lane shifts will be in effect. The work area extends from Elm Street to Ivanhoe, including Union Street north of Ivanhoe to the Battle Creek River. Work hours are planned for 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until the project is completed in mid-February.

Once the CIPP liner is set, it will provide the area’s sanitary sewer mains with an estimated lifespan of 75 years. Map of Elm, Ivanhoe, and Union Streets where lane shifts are expected to occur throughout Jan-Feb
