More information: BATTLE CREEK, Mich. The Battle Creek Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 53 Lark Street shortly after 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Upon arrival, Car 3 found a single-family residence with heavy fire engulfing the first floor, which quickly spread to the second floor as the first engines arrived on scene.

Due to the significant volume of fire, crews initiated their fire attack from the exterior before advancing hose lines inside. The stability of the first and second floors of the home was compromised, making it challenging for crews to access all affected areas.

Firefighters remained on scene for several hours. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the fire marshal. All occupants were able to exit the structure safely; however, the family pets perished in the fire.
