BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The City of Battle Creek, in partnership with organizations across Calhoun County, is working to reduce the harmful effects of lead exposure — and we need your input!
Residents are encouraged to complete a brief survey to help improve community awareness and education around lead testing. The survey is open through noon on Thursday, May 29.
More than 80% of homes in Battle Creek — and over 45,000 homes across Calhoun County — were built before lead-based paint was banned in 1978. As a result, thousands of children remain at risk of lead poisoning from deteriorating paint, contaminated soil, and aging plumbing.
Despite these risks, fewer than 20% of children under age six in Calhoun County are tested for lead, according to the County Public Health Department. Data from the 2022 Kids Count report shows that only 31.9% of children aged 1 to 2 were tested for lead in their blood.
Young children are especially vulnerable. Their developing bodies absorb more lead than adults, increasing the risk of:
- Nervous system and kidney damage
- Learning disabilities and decreased intelligence
- Attention deficit disorder
- Speech, language, and behavioral problems
- In severe cases, even death
By raising awareness and improving access to blood lead testing, we can help protect the health and future of our community’s children.
