BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Battle Creek Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire Saturday morning on Grand Circle Avenue.
A neighbor called 911 around 8:40 a.m. to report the fire, stating that occupants might be trapped inside the home. Engine 4 was first to arrive and found active flames at the rear of a single-story, single-family residence, with fire extending into the attic. Firefighters from Engine 4 initiated a primary fire attack. Rescue 2 conducted a search of the first floor, while Engine 5 performed vertical ventilation to support interior operations. Battle Creek Police also responded to the scene to assist.
Within minutes, Rescue 2 located a victim inside the structure and removed them from the building. Personnel from Engine 3 and Rescue 6 initiated CPR, and LifeCare Ambulance continued advanced medical care, including the administration of a hydrogen cyanide treatment. Despite life-saving efforts, the victim succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
Two dogs also died in the fire.
The victim’s name, age, and other identifying details are being withheld at this time out of respect for the family.
The fire marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire. It has not been confirmed whether the home had functioning smoke alarms. The department reminds residents that working smoke alarms significantly reduce the risk of fatal fires. National data shows that nearly three out of five home fire deaths occur in properties without working alarms.
The City of Battle Creek and the Battle Creek Fire Department extend heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy. We encourage all neighbors to check their smoke alarm batteries and test their alarms regularly to ensure they are functioning properly.
