[ARCHIVED] Fall cleanup next week; other disposal reminders

construction waste

The city’s annual fall cleanup will take place next week – Monday, Sept. 19 to Friday, Sept. 23 – for City of Battle Creek residents only.

This cleanup period allows residents to place at the curb, on their regular trash/recycling pickup day, up to 10 cubic yards of construction waste. It will be picked up by Waste Management, the city’s trash and recycling hauler, at no extra charge.

All materials must be contained or, when appropriate (carpet and/or boards), must be bundled into four-foot lengths and securely tied. Items set out may not weigh more than 50 pounds per item/bundle.

Hazardous waste and treated lumber will not be accepted. However, the next household hazardous waste collection event is set for 10 am to noon on Saturday, Sept. 24 in the Calhoun County building parking lot, 315 W. Green St. For more information on this and other recycling events, visit calhouncountyrecycling.com.

Some additional reminders regarding waste disposal guidelines:

· When disposing of a mattress, Waste Management requires that it be wrapped in plastic before being placed at the curb. This ensures safety for all waste haulers.
· Waste Management does not accept household hazardous waste, liquid wastes, concrete, bricks and/or soil. Please refer to the county website for more information on disposal of these items (calhouncountyrecycling.com).
· When disposing of glass panels, like from a door or window, please pre-smash the glass, place it inside another container, and label it as glass, for the safety of our waste haulers.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation when disposing of unwanted items. Proper disposal is essential for the health and safety of all residents and waste haulers.

If you have additional questions regarding specific items and whether they can be placed at the curb, contact the city’s environmental programs coordinator, Tiffany Welsh, at 269-966-0712.
