Battle Creek Police Department officials are investigating video footage of a traffic stop and arrest that has surfaced on social media.

At approximately 1 p.m. Thursday, in the area of Washington Avenue and Emmett Street, officers stopped a driver they knew to have a suspended license and for whom they had a felony arrest warrant.

Police officials acknowledge there is video footage of the traffic stop posted to several social media websites, calling out as inappropriate the officers’ treatment of the driver. Police were aware from previous contact that the driver uses a walker and a cane.

The department is reviewing all sources of video and audio from the traffic stop, and plans to make an official statement early next week. No official complaint has been filed regarding the traffic stop.

The driver’s condition was assessed at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo before being released back to police custody. The driver is awaiting arraignment in the Calhoun County jail.
