[ARCHIVED] Three in custody following bank robbery

Battle Creek Police Department badge

Three suspects are in custody this afternoon following a bank robbery this morning in the 2000 block of Capital Avenue SW.

Battle Creek Police officers responded at approximately 11:30 a.m. after receiving suspect and vehicle descriptions.

Officers observed the suspect vehicle and initiated a stop, at which time the suspects fled and the officers pursued. During the pursuit, suspects fire several rounds of gunfire at officers and, ultimately, the vehicle crashed in the area of Cherry and Elm streets.

More shots were fired by the suspects and officers returned fire; one male suspect received a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the hand.

Three total suspects -- one female and two males -- were taken into custody. The injured male suspect was taken to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital for treatment of his injury.

No officers were injured and two are on paid administrative leave, following typical police procedure, while the incident is under investigation. The investigation is ongoing between local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Police expect to release more information on this incident Monday morning.
