[ARCHIVED] City, Waste Management give container reminder

City and Waste Management officials are asking neighbors to please replace broken trash and yard waste containers.

Recently, WM drivers have observed a high number of broken trash containers, which can make them dangerous for the drivers to handle. They will leave a green tag on containers that are too damaged to service, which is an alert to neighbors that it’s time to replace them.

If your container is broken, leaving sharp plastic pieces or edges, please replace it to allow for pickup. Options for containers are:

  • Purchase your own trash cart or container.
Personally-purchased containers can be a maximum of 32 gallons, and weigh a maximum of 50 pounds at the curb. You may place multiple carts at the curb, but each must meet these requirements.
If the cart has a lift bar (like the large recycling carts), it can be a maximum of 96 gallons and weight up to 200 pounds.
You also may place loose bags of trash at the curb, but neighbors are responsible for cleanup if animals break open the bags.

  • Rent a cart from Waste Management.
A 96-gallon trash cart is $3.25 per month for new cart rental customers, and is subject to increase. The average monthly rental rate for a trash cart is $4.86, and for a 96-gallon yard waste cart is $5.27.

For replacement of Waste Management carts – including the green WM recycling cart – or to begin a new rental cart contract, please call the customer service number, 800-797-9018, or visit our city’s WM webpage, home.wm.com/battle-creek.
