[ARCHIVED] Fire fighters work toward rope rescue certification

Fire Department patch

The Battle Creek Fire Department is training for a new certification this week – advanced rope technician.

Using both classroom and hands-on learning, 13 fire fighters will become certified rope rescue technicians, a first for the department. Those training are from the department’s Technical Rescue Team.

The enhanced rope skills will come into play particularly during work in confined spaces. Fire fighters use ropes to both lift a person from a confined space, and lower a person from a high place – places they can’t go with a ladder.

Staff have trained at the city’s Waste Water Treatment Plant, and will continue on the West Michigan Avenue parking structure on Thursday.

Michigan Urban Search and Rescue is conducting this training class, and is certified to do so by the Michigan Firefighters Training Council.
