Starting on Tuesday, Feb. 20, the City of Battle Creek will begin accepting applications for medical marihuana facility permits.
The City Commission on Tuesday approved the new ordinances and fees to allow the five facility types – growing, processing, safety compliance (testing), secure transport (transport and storage), and provisioning center (selling).
City staff currently are finalizing the application. This will be available on Monday, Feb. 12, on the city’s website, as well as in the Clerk’s Office, City Hall Room 111, 10 N. Division St. The application includes checklists of additional documents the applicant must submit, a Financial Information Request to determine whether the applicant owes money to the city, and authorization for a background check.
Applicants will pay an annual fee of $5,000 per license type.
The new city ordinance related to medical marihuana, Chapter 833, will appear with the rest of the city’s ordinances early next week. On the city’s website, click the I Want To… tab, then Find a City Ordinance. This chapter will appear in Part Eight – Business Regulation and Taxation Code.
Also available will be a “pick list” to assist with provisioning center applications. By ordinance, two provisioning centers cannot be within 1,000 feet of each other. To help with which competing applicant will be awarded a particular location, the pick list will include items beyond the minimum requirements, like energy efficiency for buildings, and items to reduce negative impacts to adjacent properties.
Applicants would complete the pick list voluntarily, only in the C2-C4 and C6-C7 Commercial Zoning Districts, for provisioning centers. Staff also plan to make available online a real-time map of which properties are available for these facilities.
