Residents installing new water heaters or updating their plumbing can expect to receive their city trade permits the same day.
With a few exceptions, the Inspections Division began this week issuing the following permits the same day applications are submitted:
-Mechanical: water heater, furnace, boiler, exhaust fan, chimney liner, air conditioner, generator
-Electrical: service and circuits
-Plumbing: all permit types
Permits for roofing and siding also will continue to be issued the same day.
Permit applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. to receive same-day issuance. Permit applications still will receive the same review process — review for completion and accuracy by our customer service representatives, then review from the necessary trade inspectors.
However, the permits listed above, and others as appropriate, will be issued after the initial review. If needed by the inspectors, more information will be requested from the customer.
There are a few exceptions to the new same-day process, which will follow the same issuance procedures as are currently in place:
-Permit applications for commercial properties
-Permit applications that require plan review (examples: building, fencing, fire alarm systems, signs)
-Permit applications for properties that have received an all-trade safety inspection in which violations were found
Permit issuance for these applications will continue to take three to five business days, due to the amount of review necessary to ensure that projects are compliant with applicable trade and zoning ordinances.
The city is pleased to improve our customer service by approving permits the same day as requested, and staff look forward to continuing to assist residents with these projects.
