[ARCHIVED] Fire Department celebrates team milestones

Fire Department team

Celebrating Fire Department team milestones is one of new Chief Brian Sturdivant’s priorities, and he joined in on Tuesday, as he took the oath of office and received his badge, alongside three new firefighters.

Firefighters Steven Foster, Brock Howland, and Kyle Williams also took their oath of office and received their badges Tuesday. The three started with the department in late July.

Last week, the Fire Department also celebrated the completion of the one-year probation period for Firefighters Jake Gray and Jessica Lindquist. They received their black helmets during an informal ceremony at Fire Station 1.

Sturdivant grew up in Battle Creek and, after working in fire service in other states, has returned home to join the city team.

“I am truly, truly humbled and honored to be back in Battle Creek,” he said Tuesday. “It is a very rare opportunity to come back home and serve the community that actually forged and developed me as a young kid growing up.”

Sturdivant said he looks forward to leaning on and learning from the Fire Department team already in place.

“I’m the can-do-if-we-can guy and, if we can’t, we’re gonna put our heads together and try to make it happen,” he said.

The Battle Creek Fire Department is professionally staffed with approximately 80 personnel, assigned to one of three 24-hour shifts, at six stations throughout the city. Also serving are a fire inspector, training officer, four battalion chiefs, and the fire chief. Administrative officers are at a seventh facility, Station 1, on East Michigan Avenue.

The city now is accepting applications for the 2018 entry-level firefighter eligibility list – apply online until Nov. 9 at Scroll to the Entry Level Firefighter information.
