The city's 2016 pavement programs for city streets and sidewalks have been planned for and were approved on Tuesday by the City Commission.
The scheduled and approved programs are for chip sealing and crack filling, as well as road resurfacing and sidewalk replacement. The tentative schedules for this work, weather permitting, is July to November for resurfacing, July and August for chip seal and crack fill, and May to November for pavement replacement.
As a reminder, the chip sealing process involves placing a layer of liquid asphalt/tar, placing a layer of stones and placing another layer of liquid asphalt/tar on top. The second layer is the fog seal. This year's work also includes a list of streets which will have cracks filled with asphalt, another method of street maintenance.
The bid from Pavement Maintenance Systems LLC was accepted for the chip sealing/crack filling work for just under $375,000. The firm has done this work for the city for many years.
The bid from Lakeland Asphalt Corp. was accepted for the resurfacing and sidewalk work for just under $1.7 million. Sidewalk replacement will take place on streets scheduled for resurfacing, as well as other areas of the city, at staff's discretion.
