City residents won’t have to worry about chasing loose recyclable items down the street once new, covered carts are delivered in April, and everyone will have the chance to check out the new carts in March.
The change to the recycling program is part of the city’s new contract with Waste Management, the trash, recycling and yard waste hauler that services city residents.
Every city resident will receive a new, 96-gallon green cart with a yellow lid, specifically for recycling. Waste Management will deliver the carts from April 11 to April 22. As drivers follow their usual routes, they will collect the current, orange recycle bins and deliver the new carts.
Each cart will include an informational hanger, instructing residents to place the carts at the curb with the handles facing their home. This will allow Waste Management’s automated trucks to service the carts.
The large container will help keep recyclables contained and dry, and eliminates blowing litter in the street and yards. It allows for bulky items, like cardboard, to be recycled easily.
The city invites residents to attend one of three open houses in March, where they can try out the new carts and ask questions of city and Waste Management staff. Join us at the Department of Public Works, 150 S. Kendall St., at the following times:
Noon to 1 p.m. – Monday, March 14
10-11 a.m. – Saturday, March 19
5 to 6 p.m. – Tuesday, March 22
The new carts and the automated Waste Management truck that will service them will be at all three open houses. A paper grocery bag coloring activity will be available for children, so bring some bags if you have them! Kids can color them, then take them home again to reuse.
