The city’s Community Development Division has released a community needs survey to collect neighbor input, and further their goal of healthy neighborhoods across the city.
Each year the city receives federal funding to improve housing options, and other community needs, particularly for low- and moderate-income neighbors and areas. In the coming weeks, the Community Development team will ask neighbors for input on how the city spends those U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The city conducts a needs assessment every five years, to develop a plan for spending federal dollars. This Consolidated Plan directs how the city spends Community Development Block Grant, HOME Investment Partnership, Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance, and Public Housing funds.
Each year, the city reports how it spends federal housing and community development funds through an Annual Action Plan. Previous years’ documents, and more information, is available on the city’s website, www.battlecreekmi.gov/communitydevelopment.
As the team develops the upcoming Consolidated Plan, it wants to hear from as many neighbors as possible.
To that end, neighbors are receiving a survey in their September water bills, and can return completed surveys with their bill payments. The survey also is available online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/BCConPlan2020. The city will accept survey responses through Oct. 15. The survey also is linked from the City Spotlight on the city’s home page, www.battlecreekmi.gov.
The team is open to gathering information from neighbors in other ways. They encourage neighborhood groups and community collaboratives to reach out to Community Development Manager Chris Lussier (cplussier@battlecreekmi.gov), or to Laura Rounds (llrounds@battlecreekmi.gov) for scheduling. Staff would present and guide discussions, asking neighbors to contribute input on housing, public service, neighborhood, economic development, and public infrastructure needs.
