[ARCHIVED] Staff to clean up city cemeteries

City ordinance Chapter 1070 regulates the city-operated and city-maintained Beckley, DuBois, and Young's Cemeteries.

The city is giving a courtesy notice for anyone with items on gravestones to remove those items. Staff ask that neighbors remove these items on or before Monday, Sept. 30, so that staff can clean up overgrown brush and plants before winter.

The ordinance says that when flowers, wreaths, emblems, and similar items become faded or unsightly, they will be removed by the city. The city also may remove planted items, as our ordinance says that only city staff may plant in the cemeteries.

Staff will not remove lawful veteran's flags.

We appreciate everyone's attention in helping keep the cemeteries tidy for all who visit them.

Read the full ordinance online; visit and navigate to the I Want To... tab; Find a City Ordinance; Part Ten - Streets, Utilities, and Public Services Code; Title Six - Other Public Services; Chapter 1070 - Cemeteries.
