Final Columbia water main work to close part of Riverside

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Starting on Monday, Oct. 7, work on the Columbia Avenue water main project will change for the last time, and close part of Riverside Drive.

Riverside Drive will be closed from Golden Avenue at the south, to Territorial Road at the north.

In addition, east-west traffic on Columbia Avenue will shift to the south side of Columbia. This traffic still will not be able to make left turns onto Riverside, from either direction.

The contractor may need to close business driveways in the work area. In the event of this action, signs will go up to notify neighbors and visitors where they can access those nearby businesses.

Engineers estimate this final work will take about one week, weather permitting. Once this work is finished, the Columbia water main project will be complete, and crews will remove equipment and construction barrels.

We highly encourages neighbors who use Columbia Avenue to seek alternate routes in the coming weeks, as crews continue to replace the water main between Capital Avenue and Riverside Drive.

Please obey all work zone signs and be alert for lane shifts, for the safety of our workers, and fellow drivers. We expect this project to take place through late October, weather permitting. The water main has a recent history of breaks, resulting in this project.

We will share any changes or updates as work progresses. We appreciate everyone’s patience; construction in busy areas is never easy, but is important to maintaining our infrastructure in the city.
