Neighbors in the Battle Creek city limits have one extra week to get leaves and other yard waste to the curbside for pickup by Waste Management, as city staff have extended this year’s pickup through next Friday, Dec. 6.
Staff made the decision based on the snow in early November, and the delayed falling of some leaves. The extension will not affect customer utility bills.
On your regular trash and recycling day, you can place leaves, downed branches and other yard waste at the curb in specially marked containers and/or paper yard waste bags. The bags are available at most area grocery and hardware stores. Approved containers may be up to 32 gallons in size and should be clearly marked “yard waste only.” Each bag or container may not weigh more than 50 pounds.
Please note that bags must be paper. Waste Management will not accept yard waste in plastic bags.
Other options for addressing yard waste are mowing the lawn and leaving the grass to create natural mulch, or hauling yard waste to Brice Pit, the city’s compost site, at 715 W. River Road. Winter hours at Brice Pit are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
Please do not rake leaves and other lawn debris into the city streets or storm drains. If you have an inlet near your property, we ask for your help to make sure it remains clear, to avoid clogging and street flooding; city staff perform also perform this maintenance on our 8,200 storm drains.
