BCPD_Patch-

The Battle Creek Police Department and other law enforcement agencies this morning are searching for a suspect and person of interest after a shooting that injured BCPD Officer Jeffrey Johnson.

Police are looking for Andre Durrell Yarbrough as a person of interest in this incident. Yarbrough is a 30-year-old black man, 5’11” tall and 165 pounds. Please see attached photo.

Anyone with information on Yarbrough, or this incident generally, should contact police at 269-781-0911 or Silent Observer at 269-964-3888.

At 1:16 a.m. today, officers were in the 300 block of Cherry Street when they heard yelling from a house. They believed they saw a suspect with warrants out of Calhoun and St. Joseph counties, but people at the house would not let officers in.

Four to five officers stayed near the house, monitoring it. Police believe Johnson was on foot at the house, possibly near the garage.

At about 2:30 a.m., officers said someone at the house starting shooting, and heard a number of shots.

Johnson was found on the ground by the garage and was shot three times – on his left leg, left chest, and a graze to his wrist. A fellow officer took Johnson to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital, where he was stabilized. Johnson was taken by ambulance to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, where he continues to be in stable condition this morning.

The suspect fled on foot, and BCPD officers, including Emergency Response Team and K-9 officers, are part of the search, as well as Emmett Township and Calhoun County law enforcement. Michigan State Police are assisting with a team and helicopter.

Teams are searching in the area of the scene – Cherry Street, Elm, Union, and Van Buren.

Officers found one gun at the scene, and do not know if the suspect is still armed. Officers believe the suspect was injured during the incident.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
